The upcoming Class Schedule for QueryCalc. The class schedule for the coming year is presented below. All classes are taught at the AICS Research facility in Las Cruces, NM, 40 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas. If you haven't had the chance to eat good Mexican food lately, we guarantee that you will enjoy your stay. The class dates are the result of comments of previous attendees. All classes are scheduled to be as close to the middle of the month as possible, so as to avoid month-ends and month-beginnings, with as much avoidance of local, national and religious holidays as possible. Further, all classes are taught on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday sequence so that a Saturday night stayover is automatic. Many airlines offer deep discounts for tickets that include a Saturday stayover, made three weeks in advance. The classes are arranged in an Introductory/Advanced sequence. Thursday is the introductory day of instruction. Friday and Saturday represent the Advanced portion. If you have been using QueryCalc for six months or more and feel quite capable, the first day may be skipped. However, even fluent QueryCalc users have found value in attending the full class and our recommendation is to attend all three days, regardless of your experience level. The cost of the full three days of class is $600. If you wish to only attend the Advanced portion of the class, the cost is $400.
Class Dates *Because 2003 is a year of transition for the HP3000, we're offering fewer classes this year only in preparation for conversion to the new version of QueryCalc.2003*February 20-22, 2003 Class Outline Although you will clearly get more out of the class and retain more good ideas if you have previously used QueryCalc, even if only briefly, no prior knowledge of QueryCalc or the HP3000 is assumed. Classes run from 8:30AM to 5:00PM, each day, Thursday through Saturday. The first day's class is introductory, especially emphasizing the philosophy of QueryCalc. Just as with any other class, you will remember only a small fraction of all of the material discussed in the class, but if you understand the philosophy of how QueryCalc works and the reasons that underlie its design, most of QueryCalc's behavior can be deduced rather intuitively. People write only three kinds of reports: spreadsheet-like summary reports, detail list reports, and graphics. By the end of the first day, spreadsheet and detail list reports will have been covered in some depth. The second and third days especially emphasize the graphical capabilities of QueryCalc, including drawing forms and merging detail list data with the forms, attaching graphs to spreadsheets, and producing good looking form letters. Everything about QueryCalc was designed to allow you to put reports together with a putty-like plasticity and then convert them over into completely automatic batch operation in just one or two commands. The end of the second day and the morning of the third will be spent discussing macro programming and the use of QueryCalc's prompting program. The afternoon of the third day is reserved for working on problems that you bring to class, as a group. Although the people that come to QueryCalc classes tend to come from every sort of business background, the problems that need to be solved are always surprisingly similar. And there is real value in being able to participate in solving someone else's report writing problems.
