Looking back from Sojourner at Sagan Station A composite of two images taken from the from one of Sojourner's two front on-board digital cameras.
The lander is within 3 degrees of being perfectly horizontal; a better landing could not have been expected. Because the perspective of the images taken from Sojourner are so low, some mental readjustment of the images is necessary. In this image, the (right) ramp and the deflated landing bags dominate the field of view. However, the station itself, wrapped in its thermal blanket, can also be reasonably clearly seen. The large round object mounted on the left of the station is the Earth-pointing high-gain antenna. The instrumentation on top of Sagan are the lower portions of the ASI/MET tower, the low-gain antenna, and the extensible jack on which the imaging camera is mounted. |
