The first 360 degree composite image from Sagan

This composite image was composed during the first day's operation from the planet's surface, in part to locate Pathfinder's landing site. The landmarks that allowed the relatively easy identification are (from right to left, and to a degree in descending order of easy recognition):

"Twin Peaks" (directly above the right hand edge of the Sojourner rover) Now believed to be 0.8 to 1.0 km distant.

"Far Knob" (located to the left of the rover and precisely bisected by the right-hand edge of the misaligned horizon panel) 30.6 km distant.

"Big Crater" (the large, broad rim that is located directly behind the low gain antenna's waveguide) 2.2 km distant.

"Southeast Knob" (the very minor distant rise located above the left side of the petal covered with solar panels) 21.2km distant.

These and other landmarks can be compared to the detailed Viking Orbiter map of Ares Vallis presented on the home page for this group of photographs.
